Plan the exit like a transaction
Experienced team leaders and broker-owners sometimes migrate from large cloud or national virtual brands—such as eXp Realty, Real Brokerage, or Fathom Realty—to independent virtual brokerages they control for economics, branding, or operational autonomy. Successful migration requires a documented checklist: IC agreement review, license transfer sequencing, agent communication plan, client/file handoff, commission pipeline protection, technology cutover, and E&O continuity. This guide covers operator steps without disparaging competitors or making unsubstantiated claims about any brand; confirm contractual and legal obligations with counsel before giving notice.
Large cloud and national virtual brands offer scale, stock incentives, and turnkey tech that work well for many producers. Migration tends to surface when a team wants its own brand identity, different economics, tighter ops control, or a white-label stack under their name—not because one model is universally "better."

Contract enforceability and solicitation rules vary by state. Do not rely on forum anecdotes. Retain qualified real estate counsel before announcing departure or recruiting agents.

Sequence matters: core leadership aligned → written plan for agents → individual conversations → public announcement if appropriate. Surprises destroy trust and invite legal scrutiny.
State licensing guides help map parallel transfers. Stagger by state if staff capacity is limited—do not promise same-day everywhere unless proven.

Days 1–30: counsel review, entity ready, leadership alignment, pipeline audit. Days 31–60: agent briefings, opt-in collection, license transfer filings, tech build. Days 61–90: cutover, first closings on new entity, retrospective on support gaps.
Adjust for your pipeline—never migrate mid-closing week without a written exception plan.

Often yes, but IC agreements, non-solicit clauses, and state rules may constrain timing and communication. Review contracts with counsel before recruiting or announcing.
Depends on your agreement and deal status. Map every under-contract file, document payment responsibility, and communicate timelines to agents before move day.
Plan 60–90 days for a mid-size team including entity setup, license transfers, tech cutover, and agent opt-in. Complex multi-state rosters or active pipelines may need longer.
No. Explain your business reasons professionally. Agents trust leaders who handle exits with integrity—and legal exposure drops when communication stays factual.
